The Ontario Police Video Training Alliance was formed in 1996 as a not-for-profit means of providing professional, cost-effective, in-service training videos, e-courses and other resources to Ontario’s law enforcement community. The OPVTA currently serves over 27,000 officers representing more than 90 member agencies, including several from other provinces. All OPVTA programs and courses are produced by members of the Niagara Regional Police Service Video Unit, whose body of work over 33 years has resulted in international recognition and nearly 200 awards for production excellence. Their experience and keen understanding of police procedures and culture reinforce the “by police, for police” approach that has served them and all OPVTA member agencies so well.

As a strongly member-centred initiative, the OPVTA’s nine-member Executive includes elected and appointed representatives from a cross-section of police organizations. As a guiding document, the OPVTA Constitution lays out the OPVTA’s mandate, objectives, membership fees, duties of the Executive, elections, meetings and finances. All member agencies enjoy a voice regarding what training issues are addressed and the priority with which projects are produced. The OPVTA also takes pride in having its member services and jurisdictions featured in all projects.

A long-standing partnership with the Ontario Police College helps ensure that OPVTA materials are consistent with both OPC standards and provincial/federal legislation and standards. OPVTA resources are used extensively by OPC staff in the delivery of both basic constable training and advanced/senior courses. The OPVTA has been officially endorsed by the Ontario Police College, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ontario Association of Police Educators and the Canadian Association of Police Educators..

In conjunction with the Canadian Police Knowledge Network, our catalogue is available to OPVTA members 24/7 via the OPVTA Repository on CPKN. The OPVTA Repository on CPKN features review questions, additional resources AND is fully trackable – training administrators can access viewership reports by member and by program.  While most OPVTA videos are available in DVD format, members can also receive compressed media files in a variety of formats in order to facilitate online delivery via local file servers and networks.
